Enugu was awash with colour and movement on Monday as thousands of tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke riders, staged a sweeping solidarity rally in support of Governor Peter Mbah’s reelection in 2027, underscoring a growing wave of grassroots endorsement across the state.

The riders, drawn from different parts of Enugu State, converged on Okpara Square in a coordinated procession that spanned major routes including Abakpa, Emene, Agbani Road, Ogui Road, and New Haven. The convoy, adorned with campaign stickers and images of the governor, snaked through key city landmarks such as Nkpokiti, Ebeano Tunnel, Holy Ghost, Zik’s Avenue, Timber Shade, UNEC Gate, and IMT Gate, drawing attention from residents and passersby.
Speaking during the rally, the Chairman of the association, Comrade Kingsley Edeh, attributed their overwhelming support to what he described as the governor’s impactful leadership and visible development strides.

According to Edeh, improved road infrastructure and enhanced security have significantly reduced operational costs for riders, particularly in vehicle maintenance. He noted that the administration’s policies have created a more enabling business environment, allowing operators to maximise earnings.
“The governor has shown goodwill to everyone by creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. Today, we can see that the revenue we pay is being utilised for meaningful development,” he said.
He further highlighted ongoing projects such as the construction of roads, the establishment of 260 Smart Schools, and the rollout of 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres across wards in the state. These, he said, would ease financial burdens on families while improving access to quality education and healthcare.
Edeh also dismissed claims of excessive taxation on tricycle operators, describing such allegations as unfounded. He commended the government’s transition to a digital revenue collection system, which he said has eliminated corruption, reduced disputes, and restored order within the sector.
“Revenue collection is now transparent and seamless. We no longer deal with cash payments or harassment. The system has brought accountability and peace among operators,” he added.
The association maintained that its endorsement of Governor Mbah for a second term is firm, expressing determination to mobilise widespread support ahead of the 2027 elections.
Monday’s rally marks one of the most visible demonstrations of public backing for the governor so far, reflecting the increasing political momentum building around his administration’s performance and reform-driven agenda.
