The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to restore potable water supply across major parts of Enugu metropolis, bringing renewed hope to residents of Abakpa, Emene, Idaw River, Agbani Road axis, and surrounding communities.

This was disclosed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, during an inspection tour of ongoing water infrastructure rehabilitation projects in Abakpa following the successful return of water supply to the area.
Prof. Onyia, who led the government delivery team alongside engineers from the Enugu State Water Corporation, said the inspection was carried out to assess the effectiveness of newly installed high-pressure ductile iron pipes and upgraded distribution lines integrated into the existing water supply network.
According to him, the old asbestos pipelines serving Abakpa were affected during the expansion and dualisation of the Abakpa–Opi Nsukka Road and have now been replaced with more durable and safer ductile iron pipes capable of handling improved water transmission and pressure.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to restoring reliable and sustainable water supply across all parts of Enugu metropolis.
“We carried out final inspections after laying the distribution and residential connection lines. The test run confirmed that water supply has successfully returned to Abakpa,” Onyia stated.

The SSG explained that although a few areas experienced leakages due to increased pressure, technical teams have already identified the affected points for immediate repairs and stabilization.
He further revealed that members of the inspection team physically visited residential buildings to verify household access to water supply, noting that many residents expressed excitement after seeing water flow again from their taps following years of scarcity.
Prof. Onyia disclosed that similar validation exercises would soon extend to Emene and other parts of the metropolis as restoration works progress.
He explained that the ongoing reforms in the water sector involve the replacement of outdated pipelines, expansion of water distribution networks, rehabilitation of transmission infrastructure, and restoration of supply to densely populated and previously underserved communities.
Areas currently receiving attention include Emene, Trans-Ekulu, Idaw River, Meniru, Agbani Road axis, Uwani, Robinson Street, Kenyatta Street, and parts of Zik Avenue, where direct household tap connections have already been completed.

The SSG emphasized that the state government maintains a strict validation process that requires physical verification of all completed projects before official confirmation, in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s performance-driven governance approach.
“This administration is focused on measurable results. Every project is physically verified to ensure residents are truly benefiting from government interventions,” he said.

He also clarified that temporary shutdowns experienced in some areas were part of planned technical operations aimed at repairing burst pipes and stabilizing pressure within the system.
According to him, ongoing upgrades in transmission and distribution infrastructure will ensure sustainable and reliable water supply to many parts of Enugu metropolis, including Independence Layout, Abakpa, Gariki, and Idaw River.
Meanwhile, residents of Abakpa have continued to commend Governor Peter Mbah for restoring water supply to the area after years of hardship and dependence on water vendors.
Mrs. Gladys Ugwu, a resident of Atani Street, described the development as a major relief to households struggling with access to clean water.
“We have spent years buying water at very high costs. Seeing water run again in our homes is a huge relief. The government has restored hope to many families,” she said.
The water restoration project forms part of the broader infrastructure renewal agenda of the Enugu State Government aimed at improving public utilities and enhancing the quality of life for residents across the state.
