The facility is expected to support large-scale agricultural production, enhance food security, create technical employment opportunities, and position Enugu as a regional hub for agricultural mechanisation.

Governor Peter Mbah had reportedly met a near absence of functional tractors in the state upon assumption of office. In response, the administration approved the procurement of 1,000 tractors from Nortra to drive agricultural reform and improve farming productivity.
According to officials, 105 tractors have already been deployed to farms across different parts of the state, while the remaining units are currently being assembled locally at the new facility.

The assembly plant has a production capacity of 10 tractors daily and is supported by a fully equipped service and repair centre designed to ensure efficient maintenance and continuity in operations.

The facility also houses a training institute where technicians are being trained in tractor operation, machinery management, and maintenance. The initiative is expected to equip young people with practical skills required for modern agricultural production and equipment servicing.

The project is also designed to support the 260 farm estates being developed across Enugu State as part of the government’s broader agricultural development programme. The estates are located across several local government areas, including Uzo-Uwani, Aninri, Ezeagu, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, and Igbo-Eze North.

Government officials said the mechanisation initiative would provide the equipment and technical support needed to sustain structured commercial farming and increase agricultural output across the state.

Beyond meeting the needs of Enugu farmers, the Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant is strategically positioned to serve neighbouring states, private agricultural investors, and commercial farmers seeking modern farming equipment and technical support services.

The project is backed by international partnership and foreign direct investment from Denmark, further strengthening Enugu State’s growing reputation as an emerging destination for industrial and agricultural investment.
Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have described the development as a significant step towards building a modern agricultural economy driven by mechanisation, innovation, and local capacity development.
