Nigeria Police Force Mourns Veteran Officer, AIG Kanayo V. Uzuegbu

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the passing of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Kanayo V. Uzuegbu, psc(+), describing his death as a significant loss to the Force and the nation.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, psc(+), mnipr, mni, AIG Uzuegbu passed away on Friday, May 30, 2026, after serving the Nigeria Police Force with distinction, professionalism, and unwavering commitment for more than three decades.

A native of Umuaka Community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, the late senior police officer joined the Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after undergoing training at the Police Academy, Kaduna.

Throughout his illustrious career, AIG Uzuegbu distinguished himself through exceptional leadership and dedication to public service. He held a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Philosophy from the University of Port Harcourt, a Higher Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Maiduguri, and a Master of Science degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the University of Nigeria. He also completed several professional courses in counter-terrorism, human rights, the law of armed conflict, and strategic leadership.

His remarkable journey in the Force saw him occupy several key command and administrative positions across state and zonal commands, as well as at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Among his notable appointments were Squadron Commander of No. 15 Police Mobile Force, Ilorin; Area Commander in Owerri and Karu; Director of the Central Planning and Training Unit at the Police Staff College, Jos; Commissioner of Police, Operations Communication, Force Headquarters; and Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command.

Beyond national service, the late AIG also represented Nigeria on the international stage as Commander of Sector 8, El-Dain Africa Peace-Keeping Mission in Darfur, Sudan, where he contributed to regional peace and security efforts.

The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues of the late officer, describing him as a consummate professional who brought honour and dignity to the Force throughout his years of service.

“The Nigeria Police Force prays that the Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement concluded.

The passing of AIG Kanayo V. Uzuegbu marks the end of an era for a distinguished officer whose legacy of integrity, discipline, and selfless service will continue to inspire generations of police personnel and public servants across Nigeria.
