The IGP made the remarks on Wednesday during his first official visit to the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters, where he met with officers and men of the command and addressed journalists on key national security issues.

The police chief, who was received by the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, said his visit was aimed at interacting with personnel of the command, providing leadership, and personally appreciating officers for their dedication to duty.
“I came to thank the officers and men of the command for the wonderful work they have been doing. Every day, I receive encouraging reports from Enugu concerning the arrest of kidnappers, armed robbers, and other criminal elements,” the IGP said.

During the visit, the Inspector-General also participated in the commissioning of the newly established Forensic and Investigation Centre built by the Enugu State Government. He described the facility as a state-of-the-art forensic centre that would significantly improve criminal investigations and support the operations of security agencies.
According to him, the facility ranks among the few advanced forensic centres in Africa and would greatly enhance intelligence gathering, crime detection, and prosecution.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, highlighted several operational achievements recorded by the command since March 2026.

He disclosed that the command had strengthened its crime-fighting strategy through the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), which integrates the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Squad, and Command Monitoring Unit for more effective operations.

The commissioner also praised the security initiatives of the Enugu State Government, particularly the Distress Response Squad (DRS) and the Command-and-Control Centre established by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, noting that the initiatives have significantly improved emergency response and security coordination across the state.
CP Giwa stated that ongoing covert operations against kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related crimes, as well as the interstate “Handshake Patrol” initiative, have contributed immensely to maintaining peace and stability within the state.
Speaking on election security, the IGP assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force remains fully prepared to secure future electoral processes.

He noted that officers would continue to undergo regular training and retraining to align with emerging electoral laws and modern policing practices, stressing that the police remain the lead security agency in election management.
On the issue of insecurity in some parts of the country, the police chief acknowledged existing challenges but assured Nigerians that security agencies are working tirelessly to curb criminal activities.
He paid tribute to police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who recently died while attempting to neutralize improvised explosive devices planted by insurgents.
The IGP also expressed optimism regarding ongoing rescue operations involving kidnapped victims in various parts of the country, assuring Nigerians that security agencies are working around the clock to achieve positive outcomes.
Addressing the proposed state police system, the IGP disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force had already developed a framework on state policing, which has been submitted to the National Assembly.
He said the contributions of the Nigeria Police have played a significant role in the ongoing discussions aimed at strengthening the nation’s security architecture.
Responding to concerns over manpower shortages, particularly in Enugu State, the Inspector-General admitted that the force currently faces personnel challenges nationwide.
However, he revealed that the Federal Government has approved the recruitment of 50,000 police personnel, with the exercise already at an advanced stage, including medical screening and preparations for training.
He further disclosed that the police leadership is considering additional recruitment beyond the approved number.
Specifically for Enugu State, the IGP assured residents that efforts would be made to increase the deployment of officers to the state to complement existing security structures and sustain the prevailing peace.

He noted that discussions with Governor Peter Mbah revealed substantial investments in security vehicles and logistics, making additional manpower deployment necessary.

The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting lives and property, embracing technology-driven policing, and strengthening collaboration with state governments to ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria.
