Morocco produced a ruthless second-half performance to defeat Canada 3–0 on Saturday in Houston, becoming the first nation to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup.
After weathering sustained Canadian pressure for much of the opening half, the Atlas Lions demonstrated remarkable composure and clinical finishing to claim a convincing victory. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi starred with a superb brace, scoring in the 50th and 82nd minutes, while Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time goal to seal an emphatic win.

Morocco will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay in the quarterfinal at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Thursday.
Canada Dominate Early but Fail to Capitalize
Canada made the brighter start, pressing aggressively and dictating possession from the opening whistle. The North Americans created the game’s first clear opportunity in the 11th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi broke through on goal after a high turnover, only to be denied by an outstanding save from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Morocco’s concerns deepened midway through the first half when influential midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury in the 23rd minute.
The encounter grew increasingly physical as halftime approached, with referee Michael Oliver issuing several yellow cards after a confrontation involving Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea. Despite Canada’s dominance, neither side found the breakthrough before the interval.
Ounahi Inspires Morocco’s Revival
The contest changed dramatically shortly after the restart.
Against the run of play, Morocco capitalized on a well-worked set piece in the 50th minute. Hakimi’s free-kick found Ounahi just outside the penalty area, and the midfielder curled a magnificent strike into the bottom corner to hand the Atlas Lions a 1–0 lead.
Buoyed by the opener, Morocco grew into the match, although Canada continued to push for an equalizer. The Canadians briefly appealed for a penalty after Tajon Buchanan went down inside the area, but the move was ruled offside before any decision could be made.
Canada’s best chance of leveling came in the 76th minute when Jonathan David fired a free-kick over the crossbar before Buchanan tested Bounou with a powerful long-range effort that required another excellent save.
Clinical Finish Seals Quarterfinal Berth
Morocco effectively ended the contest in the 82nd minute through a devastating counterattack. Brahim Díaz drove into the penalty area, drawing defenders before squaring the ball for Ounahi, who calmly slotted home his second goal of the evening.
Rahimi nearly added another moments later when his header crashed against the crossbar. However, the forward eventually got his reward in stoppage time, firing beyond goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to complete an impressive 3–0 victory.
Morocco Continue Historic Rise
The result further underlines Morocco’s emergence as one of world football’s rising powers. Following their historic run to the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and their recent continental success, the Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated their ability to compete with the world’s elite.
While Canada will reflect on missed opportunities after controlling large portions of the match, Morocco’s clinical finishing and disciplined defending ultimately proved decisive as they marched confidently into the last eight.
