The operation, led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, was carried out across the state on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police on the enforcement of the ban on unregistered vehicles and vehicles operating with illegal or improperly displayed number plates.

According to the Command, the affected vehicles include those that were unregistered, had covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized or improperly affixed number plates, as well as vehicles displaying only one number plate instead of the legally required two.
The Police disclosed that all offenders would be arraigned in court and prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations and other relevant laws.

Speaking during the exercise, CP Giwa commended the enforcement team for maintaining professionalism throughout the operation and stressed that the Command would continue the enforcement campaign to ensure strict compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations across Enugu State.
He explained that the exercise followed the recent directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who ordered all State Police Commands to intensify enforcement against unregistered vehicles and those with illegal number plates due to the security threats they pose and their frequent use in criminal activities.
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to motorists still operating vehicles without proper registration or using covered, defaced, obscured, unauthorized or improperly affixed number plates to immediately regularize their vehicles or face legal consequences.
CP Giwa further assured residents that the Command would not tolerate misconduct by its personnel, warning that any police officer found engaging in extortion, harassment or other unprofessional conduct during the enforcement exercise would face strict disciplinary action.
The Enugu State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic and security laws while ensuring that all operations are conducted with professionalism, fairness and respect for the rights of citizens.
