In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives of the Command’s Distress Response Squad (DRS) responded after receiving information from the Control Room that the driver and conductor had allegedly assaulted a traffic police officer who was on duty.
Ndukwe explained that the DRS operatives intercepted and flagged down the commercial bus, but instead of complying with lawful instructions, the driver allegedly slowed the vehicle briefly before suddenly accelerating in an attempt to flee.
“The driver knocked down one of the operatives, while the officer’s AK-47 rifle became entangled with the moving vehicle and was dragged away during the escape,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson added that during the ensuing chase, the suspects reportedly threw the rifle out of the vehicle at IMT Bus Stop along Abakaliki Road before speeding away.
He said the firearm was immediately recovered intact, together with its ammunition, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed tactical and intelligence teams to intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute those responsible.
The Commissioner also called on the driver and conductor to voluntarily surrender to the police, warning that all lawful measures were being deployed to ensure they are brought to justice.
He further urged members of the public to disregard misleading narratives surrounding the incident and cautioned against assaulting or obstructing police officers in the lawful discharge of their duties.
According to him, such acts constitute serious criminal offences and will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.
The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, assuring residents that those behind the incident would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
