Professor Ugwu made the disclosure while leading participants of the Renewed Hope Presidential Media Southeast Tour on an inspection of the ultramodern healthcare facility.

According to the Commissioner, the Enugu International Hospital is one of the most strategic healthcare investments of the Governor Peter Mbah-led administration. He explained that the quaternary medical facility was deliberately conceived to improve healthcare delivery, attract a significant share of the West African medical tourism market, and drastically reduce the need for Nigerians to seek medical treatment abroad by providing world-class healthcare services within Enugu State.

He noted that the hospital has been developed on a model of sustainability and in line with international best practices.

Speaking during the tour, Professor Ugwu said the hospital is proof of the commitment of the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, to delivering world-class healthcare and creating opportunities for the people within the state. He stated that the administration is building a hospital that will position Enugu as a destination for medical tourism in West Africa. According to him, with the facility and the expertise being assembled, the state is preparing for the future of medicine. He added that beyond healthcare, the project will strengthen Enugu State’s capacity for emergency response, specialised care, diagnostics, and professional medical services, while also creating employment opportunities for health workers and support staff.

The Commissioner further revealed that a major pillar of the pioneering medical institution is the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery and advanced oncology diagnostics, including Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) scanning technology. He said these innovations would place Enugu State at the forefront of precision medicine in the region.

Professor Ugwu also disclosed that the Mbah administration is leveraging strategic partnerships with the global diaspora by attracting highly skilled medical professionals of Enugu origin back home to spearhead clinical operations, strengthen specialised healthcare services, and build local capacity.

The Enugu International Hospital is expected to significantly enhance the state’s emergency response system, expand access to specialised medical care, create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals and support staff, and reinforce Enugu’s emergence as a leading destination for advanced healthcare and medical tourism in West Africa.
