The suspension, which takes immediate effect from July 15, 2026, was announced by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, in a statement issued on Thursday through the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Nebeife.

The affected monarchs are Igwe C. Ozoigbokwe of Umuaji, Imezi Owa Autonomous Community, Igwe Leo Nechi of Imezi Owa Autonomous Community, and Igwe Benedict Adinde of Umuagba Autonomous Community.

Also suspended are Chief Samson Ike (Umuagba Owa Town Union), Chief Remigus Ozoanya (Ezema Owa Town Union), Chief Peter Igwebuike (Imezi Owa Town Union), and Chief Lazarus Ejim (Ogwumike Owa Town Union), all serving as Presidents-General of their respective communities.

According to Dr. Egumgbe, the disciplinary action followed what the government described as serious acts of misconduct bordering on security infractions within the affected communities.

He said the alleged actions run contrary to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s zero-tolerance policy on insecurity and have undermined the administration’s sustained investment in protecting lives and property across Enugu State.

The commissioner noted that the conduct of the affected community leaders not only embarrassed the state but also dented the integrity of the traditional institution while frustrating the government’s security efforts.

He explained that the suspension was carried out in line with the provisions of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Law, 2024, and the Town Union Registration and Administration Law, 2025.

While the government did not disclose the specific allegations against the affected officials, Dr. Egumgbe said the suspension will remain in force pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

He added that the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs would take further administrative action in line with the law after the investigation is concluded.

The latest development sends a strong signal that the Mbah administration is prepared to hold community leaders accountable and will not tolerate any act capable of compromising the security architecture of Enugu State, regardless of status or position.
