Governor Peter Mbah has launched the 2026 agricultural input distribution programme for 63,000 registered smallholder farmers across Enugu State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving food production and expanding the state’s agricultural sector.

The programme will provide beneficiaries with free fertilizers, improved seeds, cassava stems, agrochemicals, and other farming inputs to increase crop yields and support commercial agriculture across the state’s 17 local government areas.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Gov. Mbah described agriculture as a key driver of Enugu State’s economic development, emphasizing the government’s continued investment in mechanized farming, agro-processing, rural infrastructure, and agricultural value chains.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at helping farmers transition from subsistence farming to commercial production while strengthening food security and creating new economic opportunities.
The governor also urged officials overseeing the programme to ensure that the farm inputs reach verified beneficiaries through the state’s farmer database. He warned against the diversion or sale of the items, stressing that they are meant to improve agricultural productivity and support farmers.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr. Patrick Ubru, said the 2026 programme marks a significant increase in support for farmers, with more than 63,000 bags of fertilizer and other essential farm inputs to be distributed statewide.
According to him, the government has also registered thousands of farmers digitally, established a modern seed testing laboratory, trained farmers in climate-smart agricultural practices, expanded mechanization through tractor partnerships, and continued investments in irrigation systems to enable year-round farming.
Agricultural stakeholders welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward improving rural livelihoods, increasing food production, and strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.
The Enugu State Government says it will continue investing in sustainable agriculture, agro-processing, and export-oriented farming as part of its long-term economic development strategy.
