The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s transformative development agenda through strategic investments in infrastructure, commerce, tourism, and transparent governance.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the Orie Awgu Market and ongoing projects at the Awgu Game Village on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Hon. Okolo said his administration remains focused on delivering projects that will improve economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life for residents across the local government.
The inspection tour, attended by traditional rulers led by HRH Okeke Kingsley Uchechukwu, political leaders, community stakeholders, market executives, and residents, provided an opportunity for the council chairman to assess key development needs while engaging directly with the people.
At the Orie Awgu Market, one of the largest commercial centres in Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Okolo undertook an extensive inspection of the market’s facilities as part of plans to transform it into a modern commercial hub capable of supporting increased business activities and driving economic growth.

The chairman visited the foodstuff, timber, and livestock sections of the market, interacting with traders and receiving firsthand information on challenges relating to infrastructure, accessibility, sanitation, and the overall business environment.
Addressing traders and stakeholders, Hon. Okolo described the exercise as the beginning of a comprehensive redevelopment programme that would provide a befitting market environment capable of stimulating commerce, creating employment opportunities, and attracting greater investment to Awgu.

He noted that despite the market’s strategic importance to the local economy, it had remained underdeveloped for many years, stressing that there were no legal impediments preventing its full development.
To guarantee fairness and transparency, the chairman announced plans to establish a verification committee that would identify and verify all individuals and groups with legitimate interests in the market land before physical development commences.
He assured stakeholders that no genuine claimant would be marginalized during the redevelopment process, emphasizing that the project would be implemented through broad consultation and inclusiveness.
Hon. Okolo urged market leaders, traders, and community members to cooperate fully with the council, describing the project as a major component of his administration’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure, strengthen commerce, and create a more enabling environment for businesses across Awgu Local Government Area.

Responding on behalf of traders, leaders of the various market sections commended Hon. Okolo and the Enugu State Government for initiating plans to modernize the market.
They described the proposed redevelopment as a timely intervention that would improve trading activities, enhance the business environment, and attract increased commercial investment into Awgu, while pledging their full cooperation for the successful execution of the project.

Hon. Okolo also praised Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for what he described as unprecedented infrastructural transformation and purposeful leadership across Enugu State. According to the chairman, the governor’s bold development initiatives have continued to reshape communities and improve public confidence in governance through investments in critical infrastructure and economic reforms.

He particularly commended the state government’s decisive action against illegal revenue collection, warning individuals involved in unauthorized tax collection to desist or face the full weight of the law.
“We have a functional reporting system through which members of the public can report anyone engaged in illegal revenue collection. Those involved in such unlawful activities should stop immediately or be prepared to face the consequences,” Hon. Okolo said.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting government efforts aimed at entrenching transparency and accountability in the state’s revenue administration.
The council chairman also inspected ongoing construction and infrastructure projects at the Awgu Game Village, a facility being repositioned as a major tourism and recreational destination in Enugu State.
After assessing the projects, Hon. Okolo expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, commending the engineers, contractors, and site workers for their professionalism and commitment to delivering durable infrastructure.
He noted that the transformation of the Game Village aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of expanding tourism, attracting investment, and diversifying the state’s economy while creating employment opportunities for residents.
According to him, the completion of the facility will stimulate economic activities, promote leisure and hospitality, and position Awgu as one of Enugu State’s emerging tourism and investment destinations.
Hon. Okolo reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to delivering impactful, people-centred projects that will improve infrastructure, expand commercial opportunities, and promote sustainable development across Awgu Local Government Area.
He maintained that the inspection tour reflects his administration’s determination to complement Governor Peter Mbah’s development agenda by building a more prosperous, modern, and economically vibrant Awgu.
The visit concluded with renewed optimism among traders, community leaders, and stakeholders, who expressed confidence that the planned transformation of Orie Awgu Market and the ongoing development of the Awgu Game Village would usher in a new era of economic growth, infrastructural advancement, and sustainable prosperity for the people of Awgu. This version reads like a polished newspaper feature, with a continuous narrative flow while retaining all the key details and professional journalistic tone.
