The Federal Government has taken a major step towards the actualisation of the Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Ako-Nike, Enugu State, with a high-powered team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) scheduled to arrive in Enugu for an assessment of the proposed university site.

The assessment team, led by Dr. Kareem Olawale Lateef, Director of University Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, is expected in Enugu on Sunday and will proceed to Ako-Nike on Monday for an inspection of the designated site.
Before the inspection, the team is expected to pay a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah, at the Government House.
The visit is part of the Federal Ministry of Education’s standard process for establishing new federal universities. Officials are expected to assess the suitability of the allocated land and other requirements necessary for the institution’s take-off.
The outcome of the assessment is expected to pave the way for subsequent steps towards the development of infrastructure at the site.
The Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Ako-Nike, was approved by the Federal Government in the last quarter of 2025 after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, assented to the legislation establishing the institution.
The Bill was sponsored by Hon. Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Professor Nnamchi had expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for assenting to the legislation, describing the establishment of the university as a major development capable of advancing agricultural education, research, innovation and human-capital development in Enugu East/Isi-Uzo.
The lawmaker noted that the institution would be particularly significant to the constituency, where a large proportion of the population is engaged in agriculture and related economic activities.
Nnamchi also acknowledged the support of Governor Mbah, particularly the speedy approval of the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the land allocated for the university.
He further commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and officials of the ministry for sustaining the process and ensuring that momentum towards the institution’s take-off was not lost.
With the Federal Government’s assessment team now heading to the proposed site, expectations are rising among residents, traditional institutions and stakeholders across Enugu East/Isi-Uzo.
For many stakeholders, the significance of the visit goes beyond the inspection itself. It represents an important transition from legislative approval and presidential assent to the physical implementation of the university project.
The development could ultimately position Ako-Nike as a major centre for agricultural education, research and innovation, while creating new opportunities for students, researchers, farmers, entrepreneurs and communities across Enugu State.
From presidential assent to site assessment, the Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Ako-Nike, is now moving from promise to the early stages of reality.
