ENUGU DEFIES CHOLERA WAVE AS 35 STATES RECORD 65,000 CASES — NCDC COMMENDS MBAH

Enugu State has recorded a remarkable public health milestone, emerging as the only state in Nigeria yet to report a case of cholera this year, even as more than 65,000 suspected cases have been recorded across 35 other states.

The development has attracted commendation from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), with its Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, specifically acknowledging the proactive efforts of the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Mbah.

According to Idris, the government has demonstrated a serious commitment to preventing the spread of the disease, describing it as “seriously proactive,” “serious-minded” and “active in doing the needful.”

The NCDC chief also dismissed any suggestion that cholera cases may have been concealed in the state, reinforcing the credibility of Enugu’s zero-case record.

The development is particularly significant because cholera remains a major public-health concern in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season when contaminated water, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene can heighten the risk of transmission.

Enugu’s experience therefore presents a compelling story about the importance of prevention.

Rather than waiting for an outbreak before responding, the emphasis on surveillance, sanitation, public-health awareness, preventive healthcare and accessible medical services appears to be helping the state stay ahead of the threat.

For the Mbah administration, the NCDC commendation offers external recognition of a healthcare strategy that seeks to strengthen the system before emergencies arise.

Yet, zero reported cases should not be mistaken for a reason to relax. Public-health victories are sustained through continuous vigilance. Surveillance must remain active, sanitation standards must be maintained, access to safe water must be protected, and citizens must continue to receive timely information on disease prevention.

There is, after all, a quiet power in prevention.

When prevention succeeds, there may be no dramatic hospital scenes, no emergency declarations and no outbreak headlines. There is simply a population that continues to live, work and thrive without the disease that could have disrupted its daily life.

That is the significance of Enugu’s zero-cholera record.

At a time when cholera is challenging several parts of Nigeria, Enugu’s story under Governor Peter Mbah is a reminder that effective public healthcare is not merely about treating disease after it appears — it is about building systems capable of keeping the disease away in the first place.
