The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has intensified its public sensitisation campaign against one-way driving and roadside trading in the Abakpa axis of Enugu East, as stakeholders commend the government’s efforts to restore order, improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.
The sensitisation exercise, which commenced on August 10, 2026, covered major traffic corridors including Ukwu Aki, Texaco, NOWAS, T-Junction and Nkwo—areas that have continued to experience traffic violations, illegal roadside trading and other forms of road obstruction.
As part of the exercise, the Ministry issued a seven-day ultimatum to traders operating on roadways and other obstructed areas to vacate the affected locations.
The Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, explained that the ongoing exercise was primarily aimed at sensitising motorists, traders and other road users, stressing that strict enforcement and prosecution of offenders would commence upon the expiration of the grace period.
«“One-way driving is a death trap. Keep to your lane and keep the roads clear,” Dr. Ozor cautioned.»
Commending the intervention, Prince Nnamani OBINWANNE Nicholas, First Class Prince of Alulu Ancient Kingdom, urged residents of Enugu East, particularly motorists and traders, to cooperate with the government and comply with the Ministry’s directives.
Prince Nnamani described the initiative as timely and necessary, noting that curbing one-way driving and roadside trading would contribute significantly to restoring order, improving traffic movement and protecting the lives of road users.
“I applaud the Enugu State Government for this critical intervention to restore order and safety on our roads. The dangers of one-way driving and the chaos caused by roadside trading cannot be overstated.
“I call on all residents, traders and motorists to see this as a collective responsibility and cooperate fully with the Ministry to make Abakpa safer and more accessible for everyone,” he said.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening traffic management, promoting responsible road use and improving road safety across Enugu State, with the Abakpa axis remaining a key area of focus under its ongoing reforms.
