The Honourable Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Enugu State, Chief Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, has congratulated the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, on the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Law degree by the University of East London, United Kingdom. The Commissioner described the honour as more than an academic distinction, but a fitting recognition of a leader whose vision places education, human capital development and the empowerment of people at the heart of sustainable development.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Governor Mbah reflected on the remarkable journey that began at the University of East London 29 years ago. He recalled being asked as a student to put down on paper his own blueprint and imagine a world that did not yet exist, while believing that he could someday play a role in creating it. “Twenty-nine years later, much of it has come through,” the Governor said, recalling that his journey began at the university with a blue piece of paper. Drawing a connection between that early vision and the transformation taking place in Enugu today, he added: “Your tomorrow begins today, and as you say, ndi Enugu, tomorrow is here.” For Commissioner Ozongwu, the Governor’s reflection is a powerful testimony to the transformative power of education and the importance of daring to imagine, plan and build for the future.
Chief Ozongwu noted that Governor Mbah’s commitment to human capital development is clearly reflected in the administration’s decision to commit 33 per cent of the state’s annual budget to education. He described the allocation as a bold statement of priorities and a strategic investment in the people of Enugu. Beyond conventional education, the Commissioner highlighted the administration’s development of Smart Green Schools across the 260 wards, alongside the strengthening of vocational and skills-based education, designed to equip young people with practical, relevant and employable skills with which they can compete in today’s economy. He said the administration’s investment in healthcare and other social sectors is equally important in building a healthy and productive workforce, noting that a skilled workforce can only deliver sustainable development when supported by good health and wellbeing.
The Commissioner further observed that the Governor’s personal journey—from the University of East London to the Nigerian Bar, and subsequently into business and public service—provides a compelling example of what purposeful education can achieve. He said the honorary doctorate is particularly significant because the institution where Governor Mbah’s journey began 29 years ago has returned to honour him for his accomplishments and service to society. According to him, the recognition reinforces the wisdom of the administration’s philosophy that the most valuable investment any government can make is an investment in its people, because educated, skilled, healthy and empowered citizens constitute the foundation for lasting economic growth and inclusive prosperity.
The Commissioner wishes His Excellency many more years of impactful service, greater accomplishments and continued success in the transformation of Enugu State.
Indeed, when education is prioritised, human capital flourishes; when human capital flourishes, development becomes sustainable.
While congratulating Governor Mbah on the well-deserved recognition, Chief. Ozongwu commended him for placing human capital development at the heart of the Tomorrow Is Here vision. “This honour is not only a recognition of His Excellency’s accomplishments; it is also a recognition of a leadership vision that understands that no society can achieve sustainable development without investing deliberately in its people,” he said. He expressed confidence that the recognition would further inspire the Governor to deepen his commitment to education, vocational training, healthcare and other initiatives that empower citizens to become productive participants in the state’s development. From the blue piece of paper written 29 years ago to the transformation being witnessed in Enugu today, the journey is a powerful reminder that when people are given the knowledge, skills and opportunity to shape their future, tomorrow truly begins today.
