MMAKU SPEAKS: THE POLITICAL WIND BLOWS TOWARDS MBAH, OKOLO AND APC

The political temperature in Mmaku is rising, and the September 26 Awgu Local Government Area election is beginning to assume the character of a contest in which grassroots sentiment, community networks and the credibility of competing political narratives could prove decisive.

Across Mmaku-Agbor, Agulese Mmaku and Mmaku-Ugwu Autonomous Communities, the campaign train of the All Progressives Congress (APC) received a warm reception, with community leaders, party stakeholders and residents expressing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Awgu LGA Executive Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, and other APC candidates.

The significance of the gatherings lies less in the pageantry that often accompanies political campaigns and more in the conversations taking place beneath it. At the local level, elections are shaped by relationships, ward structures, community influence and, ultimately, the confidence voters place in those seeking their mandate.

At Mmaku-Agbor, the campaign was received by an array of community and political stakeholders, including the President-General, Hon. Chidozie Ozoemenam; Ward Chairman, Hon. Basil Orji; Ohamadike Nnanyelugo Bob Anude; Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Prof. Benedette Ekwutosi Okoli; Prof. G.I. Uduhere; Hon. Anthony Nwankwo; Director-General of the Awgu Chairmanship/Councillorship Election Campaign, Hon. Nathan Okey Udeh; APC Awgu LGA Chairman, Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; Hon. Nelson Uduji; Hon. Chinedu Oha; Hon. Kingsley; Barr. Eze O. Eze; Sir Ralph Onovo; Hon. Ndubuisi Nwankwo; Chief Ogbuefi Paul Ande; Hon. Ndubuisi Udeigwe; Tom Onyeama and others.

Prof. Benedette Ekwutosi Okoli, speaking during the visit, linked the reception to what she described as growing public appreciation of the administration of Governor Mbah. She cited government projects and interventions as part of the reasons for the support being expressed by residents, declaring that “Mmaku-Agbor is for APC.”

Her remarks captured one of the central themes of the campaign: the attempt to make development, rather than party identity alone, the basis for political persuasion.

At Agulese Mmaku, the gathering opened with prayers led by Sir Razz Udeh. Among those present were Dr. Oliver ChukwuObasi and Hon. Chief Alphonsus Orji, alongside other community and political stakeholders who expressed their readiness to participate in the grassroots mobilisation for the election.

The campaign subsequently moved to Mmaku-Ugwu, where the political gathering brought together a cross-section of community leaders, elected and aspiring representatives, party officials and other stakeholders. The event opened with prayers by the President-General, Deacon Ilechukwu.

Those in attendance included Prof. G.I. Uduhere; Prof. Benedette Ekwutosi Okoli; APC Awgu North State Constituency candidate, Prince Charles Ezenta; Awgu South member and candidate, Hon. Anthony Nwankwo; APC Awgu LGA Chairman, Hon. Kenechukwu Okolo; Councillorship candidate for Mmaku/Mgbidi Ward, Chinedu Oha; Hon. Lady Angela Anua; Legislative Secretary to Senator Osita Ngwu, Hon. Solomon Orjiukwu; Rt. Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Chukwu and others.

The occasion also carried familiar cultural symbolism. Hon. Lady Angela Anua presented cassava to Hon. Uchenna Okolo, while Chinedu Oha presented a goat and yam, gestures that underscored the traditional character of political engagement within the community.

Addressing the gathering, Okolo commended Governor Peter Mbah for what he described as exceptional leadership and a commitment to development. He presented the administration’s interventions as evidence of a broader attempt to redefine the relationship between government and citizens through infrastructure, education, economic initiatives and social development.

Particular attention was drawn to the proposed remodelling of schools in Mmaku to the Smart Green Schools standard. Okolo said the initiative would bring modern educational facilities closer to residents and reduce the distance children currently travel to access the Smart Green School in Mgbidi.

He also highlighted the Enugu Air project, Game Village and the proposed Smart Farm Village, while calling on communities to cooperate with government and make land available where required for development projects.

These issues provide the APC campaign with a development argument as the election approaches: that political support should be connected to tangible projects and the prospect of continuity. It is an argument the party is now taking directly into communities where voters are likely to measure promises against lived experience.

For Mmaku, however, the election remains bigger than the rhetoric of any single political party. The competing forces will eventually have to confront the hard arithmetic of voter mobilisation, ward-level organisation and community sentiment.

The declarations witnessed during the campaign may offer an indication of where sections of the electorate presently stand, but the ballot box remains the final arbiter. On September 26, the political conversations of today will meet the electoral choices of tomorrow.

For now, Mmaku has made its position known. The real question is whether that voice will survive the journey from the campaign ground to the ballot box.
