The political contest in Awgu Local Government Area has ended with a familiar name at the top.

Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared winner of the September 26, 2026 chairmanship election, securing a second term as Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area.

Okolo’s victory followed the conclusion of the collation of results from the various electoral areas in the council, after which the Local Government Collation Officer formally declared him winner at the Awgu Local Government Secretariat.

The result effectively hands the incumbent chairman another mandate to preside over the affairs of the council, following a keenly contested election in which he faced candidates fielded by other political parties.

For Okolo and his supporters, the result represents the continuation of a political journey that has, in recent weeks, been defined by an energetic grassroots campaign and a sustained argument for continuity.

Across Awgu, the APC campaign made its presence felt in communities including Ogbaku, Awgunta, Obeagu, Ituku, Isuawa, Agbudu, Ogugu, Amoli, Enyimba and other parts of the council area.

At the heart of the campaign was the argument that the administration’s record should be allowed to continue, with party leaders and community stakeholders drawing attention to projects and interventions attributed to the Okolo administration.

The campaign also became an avenue for the APC to consolidate its grassroots structure, with meetings and engagements involving community leaders, youths, women and party stakeholders ahead of the election.

On September 23, the party brought its campaign to a close with a grand finale at Central School, Agbogugu, marking the final major mobilisation before voters went to the polls three days later.

Now that the votes have been counted and the result declared, the political noise of the campaign gives way to the more demanding business of governance.

A second term carries with it both continuity and expectation. For the people of Awgu, the immediate concern will be what the renewed mandate produces in practical terms across the communities that make up the local government.

The election is therefore not merely about the return of an incumbent. It is also about the responsibilities that come with another mandate — delivering on promises, responding to local needs and translating political support into tangible development.

With his declaration as winner, Okolo is set to continue as Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, subject to the applicable electoral and legal processes.

The campaign is over. The victory has been declared. What remains now is the work of governing Awgu.
