The Enugu State Government has intervened in the case of Chinaza, a 16-year-old girl from Nnewe community in Aninri Local Government Area, who was reportedly sexually abused by her father and subsequently banished by her community, providing her with safe shelter and support.

The intervention, coordinated by the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, follows widespread public concern over the teenager’s reported ordeal and circumstances that left her vulnerable and in need of urgent protection.

With the intervention, the state government has assured the public that Chinaza’s safety, physical health, emotional well-being and overall welfare will be prioritised as she begins the process of recovery.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, said the government was committed to ensuring that the teenager receives appropriate care, including psychosocial support to help her cope with the trauma associated with her experience.

Enih emphasised that no child should be blamed, rejected or punished for being a victim of sexual abuse, stressing that every child deserves protection, dignity, compassion and access to justice.

The Commissioner’s position reinforces the need for a child-centred response to sexual abuse, particularly in circumstances where survivors may face stigma, rejection or further victimisation instead of receiving the support they need.

The state government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable children, upholding their rights and strengthening child protection mechanisms across the state.

Meanwhile, efforts to apprehend the alleged perpetrator are ongoing, as he is reportedly on the run. The Ministry said it remained committed to working with the relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and justice pursued in accordance with the law.

The government also commended members of the public who raised the alarm and brought Chinaza’s situation to the attention of the authorities, noting that public vigilance and timely reporting can play an important role in protecting vulnerable children.

The case has renewed attention on the need to protect survivors of sexual abuse from stigma, discrimination and community rejection. Child protection advocates have consistently emphasised that victims should receive appropriate care and protection, while allegations of abuse should be investigated by the relevant authorities.

For Chinaza, the government’s intervention represents an important step towards safety and recovery. Sustained care, emotional support and protection from further harm will remain essential as she works towards rebuilding her life.

The Enugu State Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that vulnerable children are protected and that no child is left without assistance when faced with abuse or circumstances that threaten their safety.
