The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has warned senior police officers against unprofessional conduct, extortion and the degrading treatment of citizens, insisting that effective policing must be anchored on discipline, accountability and respect for the law.

Giwa also directed supervisory officers to strengthen oversight of their personnel and improve security arrangements for political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commissioner gave the directives on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during an emergency conference with senior officers at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu.

The meeting followed a strategic conference convened virtually on Tuesday by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who outlined key priorities for policing, including professional conduct, compliance with the Force’s social media policies, respectful engagement with citizens and effective management of political activities in the run-up to the 2027 elections.

At the Enugu meeting, Giwa underscored the responsibility of senior officers to ensure that the conduct of personnel under their command reflects the standards expected of a modern police force.

He maintained that officers could not discharge their policing responsibilities effectively while disregarding the rights and dignity of the citizens they were employed to protect.

The commissioner warned that extortion, abuse of authority and other forms of professional misconduct would not be tolerated, directing supervisory officers to take responsibility for enforcing discipline within their respective formations.

He further emphasised the need for strict adherence to existing laws and established professional standards, warning that personnel found culpable of misconduct would face appropriate consequences.

With political activities expected to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Giwa also charged officers to strengthen operational preparedness and ensure effective security management during political gatherings and other election-related engagements.

The emphasis on election security highlights the importance of professional and impartial policing in creating an environment where political actors and citizens can participate in the electoral process without intimidation or violence.

The conference also featured a health talk on the Ebola virus, extending the engagement to health awareness among senior personnel.

Those in attendance included Deputy Commissioners of Police, Assistant Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, heads of formations, tactical and operational units, and heads of various sections of the Enugu State Police Command.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a press release issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
