The distribution, which took place on March 28, 2025, at Hon. Onwuegbu’s Enugu residence, was attended by the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA South East, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, represented by a team led by Mr. Nnanyelugo Ezeani. The relief materials provided by the federal government included food and non-food items.

According to Mrs. Echeazu, “The distinguished Hon (Engr) Anayo Onwuegbu at the peak of rainy season last year 2024, officially requested for relief intervention for members of his constituency who were affected by flood disaster especially Mpu and Okpanku communities.” She emphasized the importance of collective responsibility among all tiers of government in providing support to disaster victims.

Mrs. Echeazu noted that “This relief intervention by the federal government is therefore expected to drive the sustainable socio-economic resilience of the targeted most vulnerable individuals.” She also drew attention to the climatic variability in the country and worldwide, which have worsened the occurrence of flood disasters.

The Zonal Coordinator called on authorities to “continue to downscale flood early warning measures for efficient disaster risk management, enhance awareness creation of flood disaster through electronic, print, social media and traditional means, sanction people who build on flood plains as well as improper waste disposals.”

Additionally, Mrs. Echeazu commended Senator Osita Ngwu for his wonderful efforts and sent greetings to the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Barr Peter Mbah, for his numerous projects aimed at reducing disasters in Enugu State.

The relief items included: 25kg bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, cartons of vegetable oil, cartons of seasoning cubes, cartons of tomato paste, pieces of guinea brocade, and pieces of women’s clothes.

Hon. Onwuegbu, who was represented by his Senior Legislative Aide on Special Duties, Hon. Boniface Uchendu, commended NEMA for their quick intervention and supervision of the distribution, which went smoothly and peacefully. He also commended the affected victims from Mpu and Okpanku for their peaceful conduct.

Affected flood victims from Mpu and Okpanku, led by Barr. Peter Ajah, Mr. Bonaventure Okorie, and Mr. Cletus Ogbonna, commended Hon. Onwuegbu for his effective representation and collaboration with NEMA. They pledged more support for his administration.
