Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure Holds Contractors’ Meeting to Unveil New Vision, Standards, Partnerships

The Enugu State Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure, with the Honourable Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ben Osy Okoh, FNSE, F.ASCE, unveiling a new operational framework aimed at raising construction standards across the state.

Addressing contractors and ministry officials, Engr. Okoh described the meeting as the dawn of a new era of technical excellence, innovation, and accountability in project execution. “I am not here by accident. His Excellency brought me here with a clear mandate to deliver. That mandate requires your cooperation, professionalism, and full alignment with our vision,” he stated.

The state government has engaged Ette-Aro & Partners, a civil engineering consultancy firm with over five decades of experience, to provide professional project supervision and ensure that all infrastructure projects meet international standards.

The state is currently executing an unprecedented number of projects, including 268 Smart Green Schools, 260 Primary Healthcare Centres, and multiple road construction projects across the state. Engr. Okoh directed that all engineers on state projects must be registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and present valid practising licences. Projects lacking proper professional oversight will not be approved.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of strict compliance with specifications, rigorous quality control testing for materials and workmanship, and adherence to approved construction methods. “We want to build roads that last over 20 years. Let us raise the standard together,” he said.

Contractors present at the meeting welcomed the new initiative. Prince Ugochukwu Nnaji of Atakata Construction congratulated the Commissioner and expressed optimism that contractors’ concerns would be addressed under his leadership. Engr. Antoine Jamhour of J&J Techno Nig. Ltd described the meeting as “a breath of fresh air” for the Ministry.

In his closing remarks, Engr. Okoh urged all contractors to partner with the State Government in realising the administration’s vision of durable, high-quality infrastructure. He commended His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his bold and visionary leadership.

The meeting underscored the State Government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure and its determination to work with contractors to achieve this vision.
