Governor Diri made the announcement on Wednesday during an executive council meeting held at the Government House, Yenagoa. While he did not immediately disclose his next political destination, he assured that his decision was made in the best interest of the state and its people.

The governor’s defection received the endorsement of 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, who declared their collective support for Diri’s new political direction. Sources within the assembly confirmed that the lawmakers had reached a unanimous decision after wide consultations.

Political observers believe the development marks a significant realignment in Bayelsa politics, coming barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, also exited the PDP to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Analysts say the back-to-back defections of two sitting PDP governors could signal deeper shifts within the opposition party, as several state leaders reportedly consider new alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

More details to follow as the story develops.
