FROM PROMISE TO IMPACT: MAYOR OKOLO LAUNCHES FREE JAMB REGISTRATION FOR OVER 2,000 AWGU STUDENTS

What began as a policy promise has now materialized into a sweeping educational intervention. The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, widely known as “One Day One Project”, has officially flagged off a Free JAMB Registration scheme designed to benefit more than 2,000 students from across the council area.

The launch ceremony, held at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (IMT) Campus 3 JAMB Centre, was marked by palpable excitement. Hundreds of students gathered with a shared sense of anticipation, fully aware that the initiative represents more than financial assistance—it is an open door to higher education and expanded possibilities.

Representing the Chairman at the event, his Principal Secretary Comr. Anikwe described the programme as a strategic investment in human capital.

He emphasized that while infrastructure projects such as roads and water systems remain important, the most enduring development lies in empowering young minds. “These 2,000 students,” he noted, “are the primary architects of the New Awgu.”

The numbers tell a compelling story. In its first batch alone, over 750 students were successfully registered, reflecting both the scale and efficiency of the exercise. Yet the impact extends beyond the immediate locality.

In a deliberate move toward inclusivity, more than 200 Awgu students residing outside Enugu State were also captured in the scheme. The message was unmistakable: distance will not be allowed to limit opportunity.

As preparations intensify for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), beneficiaries were encouraged to approach their studies with discipline and determination. The administration’s support, they were reminded, is not merely about covering registration fees, it is about building a generation capable of leading Awgu into a more prosperous future.

With a total target of over 2,000 beneficiaries, a first batch of 750+ already processed, and a broad reach that includes 200+ out-of-state students, the Free JAMB Registration initiative stands as one of the most ambitious educational support programmes in the council’s recent history.

For many families, the programme offers immediate relief in challenging economic times. For the students, it represents validation, that their dreams matter and that their local government is willing to invest in them. And for Awgu, it signals a forward-looking vision where governance is measured not only by physical structures, but by the strength of the minds being nurtured.

In Awgu today, the phrase resonates with renewed meaning: Tomorrow is truly Here.
