Prof. Ortuanya made the call while delivering a keynote address titled “Mining for Economic Growth: Promoting Sustainable Environment and Conflict Management in Nigeria” at the annual conference of the Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team (NEST) held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium, Abuja.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources present enormous opportunities for economic diversification, industrialisation, job creation and investment, but warned that irresponsible mining practices could lead to environmental degradation, social tensions and conflicts in host communities.

He stressed that sustainable mining must be anchored on environmental responsibility, transparency, community participation and effective conflict management.

Prof. Ortuanya identified land degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss and abandoned mine sites as some of the major challenges confronting mining communities in Nigeria, especially from illegal and poorly regulated mining activities.

He also highlighted the critical role of universities in providing research-driven solutions, developing innovations and supporting evidence-based policies for sustainable development.

He reaffirmed the University of Nigeria’s commitment to advancing research in environmental management, renewable energy and resource governance.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Nigeria should build a mining sector that does not only create wealth but also protects communities, preserves ecosystems and contributes to national development.
