The government specifically warned against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams, and rivers, describing the practice as one of the major causes of avoidable flooding. According to the statement, blocked drainage systems impede the natural flow of water, leading to devastating consequences for homes, businesses, roads, and other critical infrastructure.
Residents, including households, landlords, business owners, and community leaders, were urged to maintain clean surroundings by ensuring that drainage channels and waterways within their neighbourhoods remain free from refuse and other obstructions.
The advisory also called on residents of flood-prone communities to remain vigilant by monitoring weather forecasts and official advisories, while making necessary arrangements to relocate to safer areas whenever the need arises.
Furthermore, the government cautioned members of the public against walking, swimming, or driving through floodwaters, noting that the depth, speed, and force of moving water are often difficult to assess and can pose serious threats to human life.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety and well-being of residents, the Enugu State Government emphasized that effective flood prevention requires the active participation of every citizen. It urged the public to embrace responsible environmental sanitation practices and work collectively to reduce the impact of flooding across the state.
The government expressed confidence in the continued cooperation of residents as efforts are intensified to ensure a safer and more resilient Enugu throughout the rainy season.
The statement concluded with the administration’s guiding slogan, “Tomorrow Is Here.”.
