President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other prominent Nigerians on Tuesday paid tribute to Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, during activities marking the 60th anniversary of his death.

President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a disciplined military officer who assumed leadership during a period of political instability. He said the former Head of State remained committed to preserving Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity during his brief administration.
According to the President, the values of patriotism, discipline, integrity, and selfless service associated with Aguiyi-Ironsi’s leadership remain relevant to Nigeria’s development.
The President also urged Nigerians to continue promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence while embracing the country’s diversity as a strength.
During the event, General Musa commended Governor Alex Otti for ongoing development projects and governance initiatives in Abia State, describing his administration’s performance as commendable.
In his remarks, Governor Otti said the memorial provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of national unity and leadership driven by merit, competence, and service.
He described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a leader whose sacrifice remains significant in Nigeria’s history and reiterated his belief that the country’s progress depends on unity and collective purpose.
Governor Otti also stated that appointments in his administration are based on competence rather than ethnic or state considerations, citing the appointment of an Edo State indigene as Abia’s Head of Service as an example of his government’s merit-based approach.
The governor further acknowledged former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan for attending the event and announced that Abia State would participate in activities marking Obasanjo’s 90th birthday in March 2027.
In separate goodwill messages, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff, retired General Azubuike Onyeabo Ihejirika, and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan described the memorial as an important occasion to honour Aguiyi-Ironsi’s service to the nation.
They said preserving the memories of national figures who contributed to Nigeria’s development could encourage future generations to embrace patriotism, peace, and national unity.
Presenting the citation of the late military leader, Mrs. Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi said the ceremony was intended to honour her father’s sacrifice and encourage national reflection rather than revisit historical divisions.
She described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a leader whose ideals of discipline, accountability, professionalism, and national unity remain relevant to contemporary Nigeria.
Former Minister of Defence and eldest son of the late military leader, Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Abia State Government, and all guests who attended the memorial.
The event also featured prayers led by the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, for the repose of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s soul, followed by the consecration of his tomb at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre.
A wreath-laying ceremony concluded the commemoration, with wreaths laid by the President’s representative, Governor Otti, the representative of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Law Mefor, Dame Patience Jonathan, and other invited dignitaries.
The ceremony ended with renewed calls by participants for national unity, peaceful coexistence, and continued reflection on the contributions of leaders who shaped Nigeria’s history.
