The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has expressed deep condolences to the family of late Inspector Ikechukwu Obodo, who lost his life in a hit-and-run accident along Bisala Road, Enugu, on July 5, 2026.
Describing the death of the police officer, who held a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, as a significant loss to the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner extended his sympathies to the deceased’s wife, children, relatives, friends, and colleagues. He prayed for the peaceful repose of the officer’s soul and for God to grant his family the strength to bear the painful loss.
The Commissioner conveyed his condolences through a delegation led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Oliver Odimega, during a visit to the bereaved family. He assured them that the Command remains committed to tracking down and prosecuting the driver responsible for the fatal incident.
According to preliminary police investigations, Inspector Obodo was on his way to his duty post at about 7:00 p.m. when the commercial bus conveying him failed to stop at his designated bus stop near Pascan Jake Bus Stop on Bisala Road. The bus reportedly dropped him a few metres away, leading to an argument between the officer and the driver after both alighted from the vehicle.
During the altercation, an unidentified speeding vehicle struck the officer and fled the scene. The commercial bus driver also reportedly drove away immediately after the incident.
Operatives of the New Haven Police Division, who were alerted by passers-by, responded swiftly and evacuated the victim to Parklane Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains were subsequently deposited in the hospital mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination.
The Enugu State Police Command also dismissed rumours circulating on social media suggesting that the officer was knocked down by a government or security convoy. It stated that ongoing investigations have found no evidence to support the claim.
The Command reiterated its determination to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the fleeing driver, assuring the public that investigations are progressing and that justice will be served.
