Hon. Professor Paul Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency of Enugu State, sponsored the motion titled “Urgent need to review the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Medicines’ price list in view of the Nation’s present Economic Situation.”

Presenting the motion, Professor Nnamchi emphasized that the safety and well-being of Nigerians remain the paramount concern of the legislative body. He noted that many vulnerable patients, especially the marginalized segments of society, are finding it increasingly difficult to access essential and quality medications in designated health management organizations (HMOs).

“This has led to adverse health outcomes and exacerbated the burden of illness on the nation’s healthcare system,” Professor Nnamchi stated. “If urgent action is not taken, the loss of mortality rate will continue to deepen.” He urged his colleagues to address the matter with the urgency it deserves, stressing that proactive steps are needed to ensure NHIS remains effective in fulfilling its mandate.

The House, after adopting the motion, directed its committees on Finance, Health Institutions, and Healthcare Services to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Health, National Health Insurance Authority, and other relevant agencies to ensure a comprehensive review of the NHIS medicine price list.

Additionally, the Committee on Legislative Compliance was mandated to follow up and ensure implementation of the resolutions.
