The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has appointed an oversight committee for the Southeast Development Commission (SEDEC), sparking excitement among stakeholders.
Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi, Member representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo federal Constituency of Enugu State and newly appointed Deputy Chairman of the committee, expressed delight over the development. “The appointment is a big boost to the eventual takeoff of the commission,” he stated.
SEDEC, established through an Act that received presidential assent this year, aims to receive and manage funds from the Federation Account for regional development. The commission’s primary objectives include reconstructing and rehabilitating roads, houses, and other infrastructure damaged during the civil war.
Additionally, SEDEC is tasked with tackling ecological problems and environmental challenges in the southeast. The governing board, as outlined in the Establishment Act, comprises a chairman, one representative from each southeast state (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo), and one representative from each geopolitical zone in the country.
