A startling revelation has emerged from the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, alleging that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, chased him out of his palace during a visit. This incident has brought to light a deeper-seated feud between the two prominent Yoruba monarchs.

The tension between the Ooni and Oluwo stems from Oluwo’s disapproval of Ooni’s relationship with traditionalists, whom he describes as “idol worshippers.” Oluwo has been vocal about his opposition to traditional practices, urging his people to detest them and embrace Islam.

In a video, Oluwo emphasized his commitment to promoting Islam, stating, “My work as a monarch is to stand for God and preach about Him alone.” He also warned against performing sacrifices in Iwo, encouraging individuals to challenge idol worshippers.

Oluwo took to Facebook to clarify Iwo’s history, highlighting its transition from traditional rule to Islamic rule since 1800. He noted that Oba Memudu Ayinla Lamuye spread Islam, converting the entire town.

This is not the first reported incident between the two monarchs. In 2018, Oluwo alleged that Ooni’s bodyguard pushed him during a meeting in Port Harcourt, which Ooni denied.

Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi (Oluwo of Iwo) and Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ooni of Ife) are both prominent figures in Nigeria’s traditional leadership. They have reigned since 2015, with the Oluwo ruling Iwo Kingdom and the Ooni ruling Ife Kingdom, both in Osun State.

As traditional rulers, they are custodians of Yoruba culture and traditions. Their responsibilities include promoting unity and preserving heritage.
