BREAKING: Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Who Oversaw Annulled June 12 Election, Dies

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), from 1989 to 1993, has been confirmed dead.

Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu breathed his last in a Virginia hospital in the United States. As the chief electoral officer, he conducted the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll.

The June 12 election saw Chief Moshood Abiola, candidate of the Social Democratic Party, emerge victorious, defeating Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. Despite being ordered to stop by the Ibrahim Babangida military regime, Nwosu released many of the election results, showcasing his commitment to transparency and democracy.

Nwosu’s legacy extends beyond this iconic election. He introduced the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot System, which ensured optimum transparency during polls. His contributions to Nigeria’s democracy have been recognized, with many calling for his recognition as a champion of democracy.
