The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide described Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as a “renowned erudite scholar, development economist, astute administrator, moral edifice, author, two-time Nigerian minister for Finance, trailblazer, and an exemplary Igbo daughter.”
The statement noted that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s re-election was a testament to her exceptional leadership qualities, her ability to build consensus, and her unwavering commitment to promoting global trade and economic development.
“We are not surprised that Okonjo-Iweala has maintained a steady upward trajectory in public life,” the statement said. “She is one of the few Nigerians who are committed to a decent life. She not only abhorred corruption and the characteristic mundane hubris in power, she initiated institutional reforms to reduce corruption in Nigeria. She introduced bureaucratic mechanisms to increase transparency in public offices.”
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide also recalled Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s role in negotiating debt relief for Nigeria with the Paris Club, including an outright cancellation of US $ 18 billion in debt, under President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The organization praised Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for being one of the few women who have made the Forbes list of 100 Most Powerful Women in the world for seven years, and for being a shining example of Igbo excellence.
The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Ambassador Okey Emuchay, MFR, described Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as “the summary of virtues; a quintessential Igbo in character, ingenuity, elegance, and integrity.”
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide congratulated Dr. Okonjo-Iweala on her re-election and expressed confidence that she would continue to discharge her duties with requisite prudence and diligence.
