NIPR ENUGU CHAMPIONS ROUNDTABLE REVOLUTION TO DISMANTLE WORKPLACE BUREAUCRACY

In a bold call for a paradigm shift in corporate governance, the Enugu State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has urged institutions across all sectors to jettison archaic, top-down hierarchies in favor of dynamic roundtable engagement mechanisms. This progressive approach, experts argue, is the key to collapsing stifling bureaucratic walls and fostering an egalitarian environment where every voice commands equal weight.

The clarion call was made by the revered Traditional Ruler of Ugwuaji Awkunanaw, HRH, Igwe Chinedu Nyia Nwobodo (JP) Ezeudo III, during a highly incisive lecture at the Chapter’s monthly meeting. Dissecting the theme, “Roundtable Technique: A Veritable PR Tool for Sustainable Industrial Harmony in Workplaces,” the monarch articulated that this model transcends mere seating arrangements, serving as a potent psychological catalyst for change.

“The roundtable approach offers a rare platform where the shackles of rank are deliberately set aside,” Igwe Nwobodo elucidated. “It empowers even the most junior staff to contribute ideas without the fear of being tagged insubordinate. When employees feel genuinely valued and heard, they are intrinsically motivated to deliver their utmost for the collective good.”

Drawing a critical distinction between professional integrity and parochialism, the royal father warned institutions against the pitfalls of “professionism”, a toxic culture where allegiance to professional cliques supersedes organizational goals. Instead, he passionately advocated for “professionalism,” a steadfast commitment to ethical standards and overarching institutional excellence.

For a roundtable to transcend mere symbolism and yield tangible results, Igwe Nwobodo laid down stringent prerequisites: the appointment of a scrupulously unbiased moderator, a strictly adhered-to agenda, and a firm adherence to meeting etiquettes. He stressed that the atmosphere must pivot from combative debate to synergistic discussion, fundamentally reorienting the focus toward collaborative problem-solving.

In a striking analogy, the lecturer counseled Public Relations practitioners to recalibrate their workplace perceptions. “View your colleagues as opponents, not enemies,” he asserted. “Opponents engage in intellectual sparring without malice; enemies carry guns. The roundtable technique thrives on active participation, encouraging the airing of divergent views. Remember that passive resistance, the silent simmering of discontent, is far more perilous to an organization than active resistance.”

Echoing the sentiments of the gathering, the Acting Chairman of the NIPR Enugu State Chapter, Dr. Onyedikachi Stanley Onovo, lauded the guest lecturer for his profound and transformative insights.
