A senseless and brutal attack has shaken the Nnamdhdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community to its core. On Monday night, Dr. Fabian Osita, a respected lecturer in the Business Department, was tragically gunned down by unidentified assailants in a botched car hijacking attempt.
The horrific incident occurred in the Aroma area of Awaka, Anambara State, at around 9:00 pm, as Dr. Osita was returning home from work. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who were attempting to steal his vehicle, shot him in the head when he resisted their efforts. The attackers then abandoned his lifeless body and fled the scene in his car.
According to eyewitnesses, the area was thrown into chaos as the sound of gunfire echoed through the streets. “I was in my shop when I heard the gunshot,” said a local trader. “I rushed outside to see what was happening, and that was when I saw the lecturer’s lifeless body on the ground.”
The university community is reeling in shock and grief over the senseless murder of Dr. Osita, a dedicated and beloved member of the academic staff. The Chief Security Officer of UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the details of the attack and expressed the institution’s deep sadness and outrage over the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Osita,” said Chukwurah. “He was a dedicated and hardworking member of our academic staff, and his death is a great loss to our community.”
The Anambara State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into the murder and is urging anyone with information to come forward and assist the authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“We are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” said the Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in bringing justice to the family of Dr. Osita.”
The tragic loss of Dr. Osita has sparked widespread concern over the escalating insecurity in the region. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at UNIZIK is planning to protest the rising insecurity in Awaka, demanding greater protection for students, staff, and faculty members.
The university community has been thrown into mourning, with students and staff paying tribute to the late Dr. Osita. “He was a great lecturer and a wonderful person,” said a student who wished to remain anonymous. “His death is a great loss to our community, and we will miss him dearly.”
As the university community mourns the loss of a brilliant and dedicated educator, the nation is reminded of the urgent need to address the growing security challenges facing our society.
