The State President lady Anthonia Chichi Ogbu made this statement during her visit with other Council Executive Members to Chinonso Echieji, a victim of domestic violence whose husband cut off her left hand at at Ibeagwa Ani in Nsukka L G A of Enugu State who is now at Parklane / ESUT Teaching Hospital in Enugu.

Lady Ogbu attributed Chinonso’s condition to domestic violence and commended Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration for its zero-tolerance policy on domestic and gender-based violence. She also lauded the state government for arresting the culprit and trying him for attempted murder.

“What the young man did is not easy to explain. I don’t see any reason why any man or human being can do such a thing. This is 100 percent gender-based violence, and in Enugu State, under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and his wife, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah it is zero tolerance for any form of gender-based violence, we say No to that,” Ogbu said.

Ogbu urged people not to stay in abusive marriages for the sake of their lives and mental health, revealing that many have lost their lives in such toxic unions. According to her, the time has come for parents and religious leaders to encourage those in abusive marriages to either separate or get divorced.

“According to Igbo Adage, ‘Onye Di Ndu gbara first,’ it is better to divorce than to say rest in peace. We are all Christians in this part of the world, we don’t encourage separation, but when it gets out of hand, we have to separate them,” Ogbu said.

The NCWS president urged couples to avoid acts capable of threatening their marriage, including domestic and gender-based violence. She also encouraged individuals to report cases of domestic violence to the authorities.

The group presented a token to Chinonso and interacted with other patients in the ward.

The visit was part of the NCWS’s efforts to support victims of domestic violence and promote awareness about the dangers of domestic and gender-based violence.
