Enugu govt launches the State Climate Policy, Action Plan, Education Manual

Enugu  State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating climate change, describing it as a real and existential threat. He made this statement during the official launch of the Enugu State Climate Policy, Climate Action Plan, and Climate Education Manual, held at the old government lodge in Enugu.

Represented by his Deputy, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, Dr. Mbah commended development partners and emphasized the importance of tree planting in mitigating the effects of climate change. He announced plans to work with the state house assembly to enact a law prohibiting tree cutting in the metropolis without approval.

The governor emphasized that the newly launched plan and policy will ensure sustainable growth, driven by science and a shared determination to uphold environmental best standards in Enugu.

Prof. Sam Ugwu, the state commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, described the event as a bold step towards a sustainable and climate-resilient future for Enugu. He noted that climate change has become a global challenge, impacting livelihoods and ecosystems, and distorting socio-economic values and activities.

According to Prof. Ugwu, the Enugu State Climate Policy serves as a comprehensive roadmap for integrating sustainability into every sector of the economy. It is designed to drive green investments, create thousands of jobs, and position Enugu as a leader in Nigeria’s low-carbon transition.

Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, Special Adviser to the governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, identified Climate Smart Agriculture as a key strategy for mitigating the devastating effects of climate change.

Other speakers at the event included the state’s first lady, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, represented by Mrs. Chidimma Egeonu, the speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, represented by the chairman of the house committee on Climate Change, Hon. Pius Ezeugwu, and representatives from UNICEF, African Climate Foundation, and NBL, among others.
