…As Lawmakers, Traditional and Community Stakeholders Grace First Session of Tenth Synod

Anayo Onwuegbu, FNSE, has reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive representation, stakeholder engagement and strategic collaboration with religious and community institutions to advance peace, unity and sustainable development across the constituency.
Hon. Onwuegbu made the commitment during the First Session of the Tenth Synod of the Diocese of Oji-River, held at the Basilica of Christ Church, Achi, Achi Archdeaconry.
The Synod, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev’d. Dr. Ikechukwu Joseph Egbuonu, Ph.D., was held under the theme, “Let Us Rise and Build” (Nehemiah 2:18). It brought together church leaders, political office holders, traditional and community leaders, as well as members of the Anglican Communion for worship, reflection and discussions on faith, leadership and collective responsibility.
Speaking at the occasion, Hon. Onwuegbu described the theme as a compelling call to action, stressing that the responsibility to build stronger and more prosperous communities extends beyond political office holders and religious leaders.
He said building a better society is a collective responsibility that requires citizens, institutions and leaders to work together, irrespective of political, religious or other differences.
The lawmaker commended the Anglican Church for its longstanding contributions to spiritual growth, moral formation, education, peacebuilding and community development, describing the Church as an important partner in strengthening families, communities and society.
Onwuegbu also extolled the leadership of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, particularly his inclusive approach to governance, development strides and commitment to good governance.
He noted that the Governor’s emphasis on inclusiveness and development reflects the importance of purposeful leadership and collective action in driving sustainable progress across the state.
According to him, the development of communities cannot be achieved by government alone, but requires deliberate partnerships with religious institutions, traditional authorities, community leaders and other stakeholders committed to peace, unity and prosperity.
Onwuegbu said the people of Aninri, Awgu and Oji-River deserve representation that listens to their concerns, engages relevant stakeholders and works consistently to create opportunities and improve their wellbeing.
He therefore reaffirmed his commitment to sustained engagement with religious institutions, traditional authorities, community leaders and other stakeholders across the constituency, stressing that effective collaboration is essential to building trust, strengthening social cohesion and ensuring that development remains people-centred.
He also called on political, religious and community leaders to prioritise the collective interests of the people, noting that unity remains a critical foundation for meaningful and sustainable development.
The Synod attracted notable political and community representation, including Distinguished Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial District, who was represented by his delegates.
Also present were Hon. Osita Ezeh, Member representing Oji-River Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, and Hon. Gregory Anyaegbudike, Executive Chairman of Oji-River Local Government Area.
Onwuegbu was accompanied by members of his team and associates, including former Chairman of Oji-River Local Government Area, Hon. Boniface Uchendu; Hon. Emeka Umera; Hon. Emeka Anukwelu; Hon. Okibe Michael; Comr. Favour Ofoma; and Mr. Sunny Nwajiagu, among others.
The gathering provided an opportunity for political, religious and community stakeholders to interact and exchange views on the role of collaboration, dialogue and collective responsibility in addressing developmental challenges and strengthening community relations.
In his goodwill message to the Bishop, clergy and members of the Diocese, Hon. Onwuegbu congratulated the Diocese on the successful Synod and commended its leadership for sustaining the Church’s contributions to spiritual development and community advancement.
He said the theme, “Let Us Rise and Build,” should inspire leaders at all levels to translate their responsibilities into concrete actions that positively affect the lives of the people.
The lawmaker stressed that building prosperous communities goes beyond physical infrastructure, noting that human capital development, education, moral values, peace, unity and responsible leadership are equally essential to achieving sustainable progress.
He further reaffirmed his readiness to support initiatives that promote peace, community development and the welfare of constituents, while maintaining open channels of engagement with institutions and stakeholders across Aninri, Awgu and Oji-River.
The Synod concluded with renewed emphasis on faith, service, unity and collective responsibility, with stakeholders underscoring the importance of stronger partnerships in building peaceful, resilient and prosperous communities across Oji-River and the wider Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency.
