In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has sacked Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, bringing an end to the longstanding dispute over the party’s national chairmanship. The court ruled that the issue surrounding the leadership of the Labour Party is an internal party matter, effectively stripping the judiciary of jurisdiction in the case.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The Supreme Court’s unanimous five-member panel set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had previously recognized Abure as the National Chairman. Instead, the court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman, affirming her position as the National Caretaker Chairman of the Labour Party. The cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction was dismissed as unmeritorious.
This ruling is seen as a significant victory for the faction led by former Anambra state governor Peter Obi and incumbent Abia state governor Alex Otti, reinforcing their control over the party. The decision is expected to have lasting implications for the party’s structure and leadership moving forward.
Reacting to the ruling, Peter Obi stated that he still has faith in the courts of the land, regardless of the judgment’s outcome. Obi’s statement was made through Dr. Yunusa Tanko, spokesman of the Obidient Movement.
