There was massive celebration over the weekend in Nkanu East Local Government Area as the Council Chairman, Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh, commenced payments to over 307 appointees under the official appointment list.

According to reports, the beneficiaries, who are mostly young people and women, were seen expressing joy across communities in the 13 political wards in the council, describing the move as timely and encouraging.

Speaking with newsmen, Chief Ogbu Nnaji Friday from Nomeh applauded Hon. Edeh for his compassion towards his people.

He stated that such gesture provides the sense of belonging to those at the grassroots level as it energizes their passion to work for the progress of the council and their party.

“This is a welcomed development, especially at a time when many of his counterparts are busy pointing fingers and blaming Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah instead of facing their responsibilities.”

“Human capital development remains a critical factor in building any progressive society, and Hon. Edeh is clearly taking the lead in this direction, particularly within Enugu State.”

In addition to the youth empowerment payments, the ALGON Chairman also completed the abandoned Ugbawka–Nara Nkerefi Mburubu link bridge. The road, which had posed serious danger to motorists and residents alike, was constructed with quality asphalt and fitted with solar street lights; an intervention that has made travel smoother for road users, especially for the people of Nara, Nkerefi and Mburubu communities etc

Speaking with newsmen in Akpawfu, Esther Nwatu, a beneficiary of the appointment list, described the gesture as “a dream come true.”

According to her, “For once, we have a Chairman who acts with sincerity. This is not about politics—it’s about doing what is right for the people.”

Also speaking, Mrs. Ifesinachi Nnamani from Nara praised the bridge rehabilitation, saying, “My people can now travel to the market without fear because Hon. Edeh has removed a burden that past leaders ignored.”

Reports also have it that both religious leaders, traditional rulers and observers have continued to commend the Council Chairman for his commitment to meaningful governance.

According to them, “We commend Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh for this wonderful work. He is one of the few among his current colleagues who see the need to put smiles on people’s faces without blaming anybody. We are happy that he is emulating Governor Mbah.”

Chidera Ogbodo, a small-scale farmer from mburubu, stated that such road projects are often neglected, even though they directly affect productivity.

“These may not trend online, but they save lives and improve business. Hon. Sydoc is doing well.”

Esther Nnamani, another appointee, noted that “what people need is support and a sense of inclusion, and this administration is providing just that.”

However, observers say the Nkanu East Chairman’s style of leadership is practical and people-focused.

It is said that, while some Local Government Chairmen in the state still hold endless meetings and offer excuses, Hon. Edeh of Nkanu East is out on the field—fixing roads, supporting youths, and gradually restoring the people’s confidence in local governance.
