Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!In a momentous occasion that underscored the organization’s commitment to unity and progress, Ogbako Ndígbo Nile Worldwide (ONN) officially inaugurated its Enugu State Chapter. The ceremony, held at Universal Hotel in Independence Layout, Enugu, brought together prominent Igbo sons and daughters, traditional rulers, professionals, and community leaders.
Delivering a powerful keynote address, the President General of ONN, Amb. Dr. Akpelu Azunna E., PhD, FIPMD, FONN, emphasized the symbolic significance of Enugu State, the former political capital of Eastern Nigeria, as the final stop in the initial phase of the organization’s regional chapter inaugurations. “Though Enugu is the last in this phase of our inauguration, its historical symbolism is not lost on us. We believe God ordained this moment for a purpose,” Dr. Akpelu declared.
The President General passionately addressed the systemic injustices faced by the Igbo people, citing underrepresentation, quota-based discrimination, and economic exclusion. “The Igbo spirit remains unbreakable. Our resilience is our testimony, and we are committed to building a Nigeria where merit, justice, and unity thrive,” he asserted.
Highlighting the uniqueness of ONN, Dr. Akpelu stated, “We are non-political, non-partisan, and grounded in integrity, cultural pride, and people-centered service. Our movement is structured, strategic, and dedicated to elevating our people wherever they may be.” He outlined ONN’s key pillars, including grassroots development, youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and strategic advocacy.
The organization’s vision, mission, and objectives were also clearly articulated. The vision is to unite all Igbo people globally in cultural pride, sustainable development, and socio-political relevance. The mission is to build an all-inclusive, ego-free organization that every Igbo person is proud to identify with. The core objectives include mobilizing Igbos globally for collective welfare, promoting peace and economic development, and creating platforms for cultural exchange, advocacy, and empowerment.
While commending the progress made by Southeast governors, especially in regional security initiatives, Dr. Akpelu urged the adoption of modern surveillance systems, such as drone technologies and aerial surveillance, complemented by support for local vigilante groups. “Security is most effective when it is local,” he emphasized.
The President General also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency in critical sectors, including infrastructure, education, security, and the rule of law. “A sincere and comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria is no longer optional—it is indispensable,” he warned, referencing the deepening economic hardship and systemic collapse.
A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the ONN Free Adult Literacy Education Program—a visionary initiative aimed at eradicating adult illiteracy in Igboland within the next 10 years. Dr. Akpelu called for broad-based support from governments, traditional institutions, and philanthropists, stating, “Education of our adults is an investment in community empowerment and intergenerational progress.” He praised the volunteers who committed to teaching without immediate remuneration, assuring them that mechanisms for future compensation and recognition are being developed.
The high point of the day was the official swearing-in of the Enugu State Chapter Executives led by Hon. Greg Onoh. He and his team, comprising local government and state-level officers, were inaugurated by the President General in the presence of other national executives and chapter leaders.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Greg Onoh expressed deep gratitude for the national leadership’s support and explained the symbolic selection of Iva Valley Primary School as the first literacy program site. “Iva Valley is sacred ground where our ancestors shed blood protesting colonial injustices. It reminds us of our struggle, resilience, and sacrifice,” he explained.
Hon. Onoh also instituted a fundamental right suit at the High Court Enugu, seeking a judicial determination and fundamental right enforcement of the 21 coal miners who lost their lives in the 1949 Iva Valley incident. He called on the Federal Government not to ignore the sacrifices and patriotism of the Igbo people in building Nigeria’s economy and unity, and joined the call for true restructuring.
The event concluded with lively entertainment, a vote of thanks from the Enugu State Youth Leader, and a closing prayer offered by the Women Leader of Enugu State. The atmosphere was filled with patriotic chants of “Long Live Ogbako Ndígbo Nile:
