In a transformative initiative aimed at improving public health and sanitation, the Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has officially launched the installation of 2,000 free Sato Pan toilets in homes across the communities. This monumental event, which took place on June 12, 2025, marks a significant step toward the ambitious goal of eliminating open defecation by the end of the year.

The commissioning ceremony was a gathering of hope and solidarity, attended by traditional rulers, President Generals, political leaders, business figures, and various stakeholders, all united in their commitment to a healthier Awgu.

In his opening remarks, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Chukwu Aganigbo, Special Adviser to the Chairman on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), expressed profound gratitude for the chairman’s unwavering dedication to ending open defecation. He described the initiative as a sustainable health solution, urging the Chairman to maintain his momentum in driving developmental projects throughout the LGA.

Hon. Chika Mbah, Managing Director of the Enugu State Rural Workers Supply and Sanitation Agency, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the critical health implications of open defecation. “It spreads diseases that affect our children and communities. Providing safe sanitation solutions is not just a necessity; it is a moral obligation,” she asserted.

His Royal Highness Igwe M. O. Egbo, Deputy Chairman of the Awgu Local Government Traditional Rulers Council, implored traditional leaders and community Presidents General to collaborate closely with the chairman in the fight against open defecation. His call resonated deeply, highlighting the collective responsibility of every community member in fostering a healthier environment.

Chief Sir Collins, the Coordinating PG of Awgu LGA, spoke on behalf of the PGs, expressing gratitude for the chairman’s ongoing development efforts. “Without health, there is no wealth,” he declared, assuring the chairman of their full support for the successful implementation of this vital project.

In his keynote address, Hon. Uchenna Okolo acknowledged the pivotal role of Governor Peter Mbah in spearheading the acquisition of thousands of Sato Pans across the state. He revealed that, in alignment with the state government’s directive to eradicate open defecation by December 31, 2025, Awgu LGA has procured 2,000 Sato Pan toilets to be installed in homes at no cost to the residents. “Prevention is better than cure. That’s why I took this step—to protect our people,” the chairman stated, his voice imbued with passion and purpose. He called upon Igwes and PGs to actively support the rollout of the toilets in their communities and commended the women of Awgu for their steadfast support and participation in state functions.

In a further demonstration of commitment to community safety, Hon. Okolo announced the commissioning of 20 motorcycles for the Awgu Forest Guard, aimed at enhancing security operations in remote areas that have previously been difficult to access.

Mrs. Kate Orji, Head of Department of Watch, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the chairman during her vote of thanks, urging him to continue his impactful projects that resonate deeply with the community’s needs.

In an exclusive interview with UGAMA TV, Chairman Okolo elaborated on the dire consequences of open defecation, linking it to the spread of diseases such as cholera and hepatitis, particularly among children. He reassured residents that the installation of the 2,000 toilets would be completed within six weeks, in line with Governor Mbah’s vision for a healthier Enugu State. Hon. Chika Mbah also praised Dr. Peter Mbah for his unwavering commitment to public health and sanitation, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that underpins this initiative.

On the security front, Chief Security Officer of Awgu, Okwueri Emmanuel Chinedu, expressed his appreciation to the chairman for equipping the forest guards with motorcycles, stating that this would significantly enhance their ability to reach remote areas.

The event was graced by numerous dignitaries, including Mrs. Chioma Dick-Emmanuel, Technical Assistant to the Governor on WASH, Hon. Stanley Uchenna Ezediuto, Deputy Chairman, Awgu LGA Rt. Hon. Mrs. Roseline Udeh, Leader of Awgu legislative council Rt. Hon. Nelson Uduji, Awgu local government secretary general Rt. Hon. JC Ikemefuna, Former Deputy Mayor and House of Reps member Olando, Former Mayor and Deputy Mayor Traditional rulers led by HRH Igwe M. O. Egbo PGs led by Chief Sir Collins Councillors, supervisors, political appointees, and other stakeholders.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a fervent rallying cry was issued for residents to come out in large numbers on Saturday, June 14, to welcome Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the Enugu State First Lady, to Awgu Local Government. This initiative not only represents a significant leap towards improved sanitation but also embodies a collective vision for a healthier, more prosperous community.
