The newly appointed officials are Colonel Dan Didiugwu (rtd), who will serve as Chairman of the Enugu State Forest Guard, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Olamitisoji Akinbamilayo, PhD (rtd), who assumes the role of Commander of the Forest Guard with immediate effect.

According to an official statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the appointment of Colonel Didiugwu is subject to confirmation by the Enugu State House of Assembly, while DCP Akinbamilayoโ€™s appointment takes immediate effect and marks a new phase in the operational command structure of the Forest Guard.

This development is part of a broader strategy by the Mbah administration to modernize and professionalize the Enugu State Forest Guard, ensuring it is equipped to address the growing threats of illegal logging, environmental degradation, and encroachment on protected lands.

โ€œIn pursuit of our commitment to protecting lives, property, and the environment, this reorganization marks a significant step toward building a more robust and responsive Forest Guard,โ€ the statement read.

As part of the reform, the government announced the abolition of the previously existing position of State Coordinator, which has now been replaced by the more empowered office of Commanderโ€”a change aimed at streamlining leadership and enhancing accountability in field operations.

Governor Mbahโ€™s administration has consistently emphasized environmental sustainability and resource protection as key components of its governance agenda. The latest appointments underscore this commitment and signal a renewed focus on enforcing forest protection laws and curbing ecological crimes across the state.

Both appointees bring a wealth of experience to their new roles. Colonel Didiugwu, a respected retired military officer, is known for his strategic acumen and discipline, while DCP Akinbamilayo, a seasoned police officer with a doctorate in criminology, brings strong law enforcement credentials and operational leadership to the team.

The Enugu State Government expressed strong confidence in the duoโ€™s capacity to reposition the Forest Guard into a formidable force for environmental protection, urging citizens to support the initiative by cooperating with the Guard and reporting suspicious activities in forested areas.

The appointments are effective as of June 20, 2025, with operational transitions expected to be completed in the coming days.
