Legendary Nigerian Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Passes Away at 61

The family of former Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has announced his passing after a brief illness on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Rufai, fondly known as “Dodo Mayana,” was a pivotal figure in Nigerian football, renowned for his exceptional goalkeeping skills and leadership.

Rufai’s illustrious career spanned over two decades, during which he:

  • Played for several clubs, including Sharks FC, Stationery Stores, and various European teams
  • Featured in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals and two FIFA World Cups (USA ’94 and France ’98)
  • Won 66 caps with the national team and scored one goal
  • Played a crucial role in Nigeria’s AFCON victory in 1994

The Rufai family has received an outpouring of condolences from Nigerians at home and abroad. In their official obituary, the family expressed gratitude for the love and sympathy shown to them during this difficult time.

After retiring from football, Rufai dedicated himself to grassroots sports and youth development through his company, Staruf Sports Development Limited. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of Nigerian footballers.
