In a statement signed by ANA’s General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji (Ph.D), the appointment of Prof. Udenta was described as deliberate and timely, given his towering contributions to literature, cultural studies, public policy, and civil rights advocacy. His keynote, she added, is expected to set the intellectual compass for the convention’s debates and engagements.
Prof. Udenta, one of Nigeria’s most respected intellectuals, is a renowned scholar of African and comparative literature, cultural studies, and aesthetic theory. He currently serves as Professor of Cultural Studies and Creative Writing as well as Director-General of the African Writers Institute, Abuja. He first came into national prominence in 1996 as a Senior Research Fellow in African Studies and Senior Lecturer at the School of Humanities, Abia State University, Uturu. Between 2001 and 2008, he expanded his expertise through specialized training across the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States, focusing on early warning conflict indicators, restorative justice, alternative dispute resolution, and post-conflict reconstruction strategies.
A prolific writer, Prof. Udenta has authored and edited more than 21 books and presented over 100 scholarly papers at national and international fora. Among his groundbreaking works are Crisis of Theory in Contemporary Nigerian Literature and the Possibilities of New Materialist Direction, Revolutionary Aesthetics and the African Literary Process, and Heroism and Critical Consciousness in African Literature. His six-volume body of work—spanning fiction, drama, poetry, philosophy, and cultural essays—reflects his versatility as both a creative artist and a critical theorist.
Outside the academy, Prof. Udenta has played strategic roles in policy and governance. He served as Director of Strategy and Communications at the Centre for Alternative Policy Perspectives and Strategy (CAPPS) and as a Distinguished Fellow of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought. He has also worked with global institutions including the World Bank, DFID, UNDP, EU Nigeria Mission, and USAID on issues ranging from democracy and culture to conflict mitigation and capacity building.
A committed democrat, Prof. Udenta was a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles against General Sani Abacha’s military dictatorship. As a member of the Eastern Mandate Union (EMU) and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he faced several arrests and detentions for his activism. Following his release in 1998 after Abacha’s death, he became National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), playing a vital role in Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule.
His influence has also extended globally. He has addressed leading institutions in Washington, D.C., including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), International Republican Institute (IRI), International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES), and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), where he shared perspectives on democracy, leadership, and policy.
With Prof. Udenta delivering the keynote, ANA has assured that the 44th convention will be an intellectually stimulating event, drawing together writers, scholars, cultural workers, and stakeholders from across Nigeria and Africa. Discussions will focus on the intersection of literature, national crises, and the critical role of writers in shaping the future of the nation-state.
