Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Catholic Diocese, Passes On

The Catholic community in Enugu State has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonna Okobo.

Okobo, aged 89, died in the early hours of Friday, according to an official statement by the Vicar General of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Amuluche Greg Nnamani.

Born on November 4, 1936, the late cleric was ordained a Catholic priest on June 4, 1966. He was appointed the first Bishop of the newly created Nsukka Diocese on November 19, 1990, and was subsequently consecrated on January 6, 1991.

Bishop Okobo faithfully shepherded the diocese for over two decades until his retirement on April 13, 2013, upon attaining the statutory retirement age of 80.

Tributes have since begun to pour in across social media and church circles, with many describing him as a devoted servant of God and a pioneering figure whose efforts laid the strong foundation for the growth of the Nsukka Diocese.
