From Drought to Abundance: How Chairman Uche Okolo is Transforming Awgu with Water, Power, and Hope

For decades, water scarcity remained one of the harshest realities of life in Awgu, leaving families to trek long distances in search of clean water. Today, that story is changing. In less than one year in office, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, has taken decisive steps that are rewriting the narrative of his people.

Barely days after assuming office in September 2024, Hon. Okolo launched a comprehensive water supply programme, mobilizing teams of geologists and engineers to design sustainable solutions. With his expertise as a trained geologist and his determination as a public servant, the “Water for All” mission has so far delivered 13 completed solar-powered boreholes, with seven more nearing completion. Each comes with overhead tanks, pipelines, and solar plants, ensuring round-the-clock access.

From Agbogugu to Ogbaku, Obeagu to Awgunta, and across several other towns, the change is visible. What was once a daily struggle for households is now a steady flow of safe water, restoring dignity and easing the burdens of families. To complement this, the Chairman launched a sanitation campaign that distributed 2,000 modern Sato toilets and trained local artisans to promote hygienic living and phase out open defecation.

But Hon. Okolo’s vision extends beyond water. Communities that once lived in darkness now have power through new transformers supplied by his administration, while more than 20 solar streetlights across 25 villages have improved security, enhanced social life, and energized local economies.

In just twelve months, Awgu has witnessed a transformation that speaks louder than promises. For many residents, this is not just governance, it is hope turned into action. Chairman Okolo has shown that local government leadership, when driven by vision and commitment, can solve problems that once felt impossible.

Awgu is no longer thirsting for help, it is tasting progress.
