Member Representing Aninri/Awgu/ Oji-River Federal Constituency
In just one year at the National Assembly, Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu has redefined the essence of political representation through tangible achievements, strategic legislation, and a genuine commitment to the people. A seasoned engineer and philanthropist, he has shown that leadership is not about promises but about results. Within 365 days, he has transformed ideas into reality and restored public confidence in effective governance across Greater Awgu.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Hon. Onwuegbu’s legislative record reflects a deep understanding of how policy can drive progress. He has sponsored three strategic bills aimed at strengthening healthcare, agriculture, and education. These include the Federal Medical Centre Bill for Achi in Enugu State, the River Basin Development Authority Bill designed to expand agricultural capacity across the Southeast, and the Federal University of Agriculture Bill proposed for Mmamu Akpugoeze to promote research and innovation.
In addition to these bills, he has moved several motions addressing pressing issues of public concern. These motions have drawn government attention to the Ivo Earth Dam flood crisis, the rehabilitation of the Oji-River–Awgu–Ndeaboh Road, and the completion of the Greater Oji-River Dam and water scheme. He has also advocated for vocational skill acquisition programmes for inmates, the revival of palm oil production to boost local economies, and the resolution of boundary disputes to promote peace among neighbouring communities. His presentation of petitions seeking justice for victims of extra-judicial killings further underscores his belief that representation must include a voice for the voiceless.
Beyond legislation, Hon. Onwuegbu’s impact is evident in infrastructure and community development. In the last one year, he has facilitated the installation of more than 340 solar streetlights to improve security and stimulate night-time economic activities. He completed a three-kilometre erosion-control road in Oji River Local Government Area and a 1.5-kilometre asphalt road around St. Michael’s Church, Akpugoeze. He also oversaw rehabilitation works at Ugwuoba Town Hall, repaired bridges in Aguabosi and Akpugoeze, and provided emergency interventions in Ugwueme community.
His commitment to road infrastructure has brought long-awaited relief to several areas. Through his influence, major projects such as the Umuenem Ezinesi Oduma Ward 3 Road, the Aninri Council Headquarters Access Road, the Ibite Road in Ogugu, the Uhuagu–Orie Awgu Road, the Uhuegu/Olikwu Road in Awgu Ward II, and the Agbogugu–Isu–Ituku–Agbudu Road—abandoned since 1956—have been revived. He personally inspects project sites to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to quality standards, a rare attribute in today’s political space.
Education and youth development remain central to his vision for a better society. More than 130 students have benefitted from NTI programmes leading to NCE and PGDE qualifications, while over 50 postgraduate students received MSc scholarships at Enugu State University of Science and Technology. He also built a new six-classroom block at Boys Secondary School, Awgu, and introduced a sports development programme covering ten primary schools, providing sporting equipment, jerseys, trophies, and educational materials. These initiatives reflect his belief that investing in education is the surest way to build a sustainable future.
In the health and water sectors, Hon. Onwuegbu has made notable strides. He provided three solar-powered boreholes to combat water scarcity and donated a solar inverter to the ESUT Teaching Hospital Annex in Nnenwe to support power supply. He continues to advocate for improved healthcare delivery and federal intervention in medical infrastructure across the region.
His efforts to promote economic empowerment are equally commendable. He distributed 600 bags of fertilizer to farmers to enhance productivity and reduce input costs. He also initiated empowerment programmes for small-scale traders, supported young entrepreneurs, and created opportunities for local businesses to thrive. By focusing on agriculture and entrepreneurship, he is helping to create a more self-reliant and resilient rural economy.
Hon. Onwuegbu has also shown empathy and responsiveness during emergencies. In collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), he facilitated the distribution of relief materials to victims of flooding in Mpu and Okpanku communities. The intervention included food items, clothing, and other essential materials. His advocacy for stronger disaster management systems and early warning mechanisms demonstrates a proactive approach to crisis prevention and response.
Within just one year, Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu has achieved milestones that many could not deliver in several years. His record of service is written in the roads, streetlights, boreholes, classrooms, scholarships, and renewed hope visible across Greater Awgu. Critics may hold their opinions, but the evidence of progress speaks louder than speculation. His leadership is tangible, measurable, and rooted in results.
From construction sites to the floor of the National Assembly, Hon. Onwuegbu has exemplified competence, compassion, and commitment. He represents a new generation of leaders who place service above self and delivery above politics. Greater Awgu, and indeed Nigeria, deserves such purposeful leadership. In Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, that leadership is already at work.
