The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Enugu State Chapter, has condemned in strong terms the brutal killing of 19-year-old Uloma Nwangwu, who was allegedly murdered by her 51-year-old cousin, Emeka Nwangwu, in Nsukka, Enugu State.

According to police reports, the late Uloma had, on 28 November, petitioned authorities alleging that Emeka had abducted and sexually abused her since she was 13. She also reported that he continued to threaten her life even after she managed to escape.

Tragically, despite seeking help and receiving medical treatment at a local pharmacy, Uloma was reportedly attacked again by the suspect, who allegedly assaulted her and smashed her head on the floor, leading to her death.

Describing the incident as a devastating case of long-term sexual violence, coerced captivity, and institutional failure, NAWOJ Enugu said the fact that the victim reached out for help shortly before her death underscores the urgent need for stronger protective systems for vulnerable girls and women.

While commending the Enugu State Police Command for promptly arresting the suspect, the association urged the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure a thorough investigation and an uncompromised prosecution.

NAWOJ further called on security agencies to respond swiftly and decisively to all reports of gender-based violence, and urged community leaders and families to reject the culture of silence, cover-ups, or so-called “spiritual settlements” in cases involving sexual abuse.

The association also appealed to the Enugu State Government and relevant support institutions to strengthen mechanisms that safeguard women and girls across the state.

NAWOJ Enugu extended its condolences to Uloma’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to the pursuit of justice, safety, and dignity for every woman and girl in Enugu State.
