The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has been decorated with the prestigious “Best Local Government Chairman of the Year” award by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council.

Okolo received the honour on Thursday in Enugu during the 2025 Press Week celebration, which held at the International Conference Centre (ICC). Presenting the award, the NUJ State Chairman, Mr. Obinna Ogbuka, applauded the Awgu Council Boss for his unwavering commitment to grassroots development and his remarkable leadership strides since assuming office.
According to the NUJ, the award recognizes Hon. Okolo’s transformative governance style, his investment in community empowerment, and the visible infrastructural renaissance currently reshaping Awgu Local Government Area. The union noted that his administration has consistently demonstrated a people-centered approach, prioritizing improved infrastructure, civic engagement, and an inclusive governance system that leaves no community behind.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Okolo expressed profound appreciation to the NUJ for the honour, describing it as “a call to deepen service, strengthen accountability, and continue to deliver meaningful development for the good people of Awgu.” He reaffirmed his commitment to leadership anchored on integrity, transparency, and results.
Since assuming office on October 2, 2024, Hon. Okolo has embarked on an ambitious transformation agenda that has delivered landmark projects across the LGA. These include the Awgu Water-for-All Project featuring the installation of over 20 solar-powered boreholes, the distribution of 500KVA transformers and 600 solar streetlights for rural electrification, and the completion of a modern ICT-driven administrative centre.
Other milestones include the beautification of the council secretariat into a world-class complex, the near completion of a new Chairman’s Office, and major road interventions such as the 3.5km Awgu–Ugwueme Road and 4km road project in Agbogugu, forming part of the 13km Smart Green School access network which is improving mobility, connectivity, and economic activity across Awgu communities.
